Talitha postcard illustration

This illustration was created for a postcard for a charter boat 'Talitha'. They like the works I did for Tiger Beer and wanted the similar old, vintage Japanese wood print feel on this illustration. This is the first commission I have received with no drawing of people in it. So it's challenging in a way also not. Because people is always interesting to draw but the most difficult subject as well.

The designers put a mock up and some reference of how
the client wanted the boat to look like on the postcard.

Some famous ukiyoe reference.

This is the initial sketch. Client's feedback was the wave was too strong. And they would like to have the banner on the right removed. Also they wanted to see a few sea birds.

After the second sketch, the client wanted to have some city scape at the background. And have the wave strong on the right hand side going calm to the left.

In order to bring the sketch more alive, I added black tones in photoshop. This time the client wanted to see the canvas turn to landscape instead of portrait.

Final sketch. Proved!
Thanks Simon Butterfield from 3 Men & a Suit in Southampton for this gig.
